Three LWTC Baking Students Win State Contest

The 2008 Washington State Sugar Artists Cake Show competition featured hundreds of cakes and desserts from bakers from all over the state. At this year’s event, recently held near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, three students from Lake Washington Technical College’s (LWTC) Baking Arts program won top honors.

LWTC student Kayoko Phillips, a resident of Snohomish, was the show’s big winner. She won the Host Chef’s Choice Award, Student Scholarship Award and Best of Division for her Dolphins on a Coral Reef entry in the sugar showpiece beginner category.

LWTC student Carmen Gentry, a resident of Bothell, won Best of Division for her Nursery Tree entry in the novelty sculpted cake beginning category. LWTC student Shayan Raouf, a resident of Kirkland, won first place for his molded chocolates entry in the artisan chocolates beginning category.

In addition, Naomi Abe, an LWTC graduate, won Best of Division for her Mice Eating Candy entry in the hand sculpted item intermediate category and first place for her Mermaid entry in the foreign technique cake intermediate category.

Janet Shaffer, LWTC’s Baking Arts instructor also won first place for her Ornate Poppy entry in the tiered wedding cake professional category and first place for her Woodland Fairy entry in the chocolate sculpture professional category.

The Washington State Sugar Artists Cake Show features 14 categories in various different skill levels. More than 70 bakers participated in this year’s event. Entries were judged on general appearance, use and choice of color, presentation, creativity, difficulty of technique, neatness, precision, and originality.

Free online tutoring now available to all LWTC students

LWTC has partnered with the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium to provide free online tutoring assistance to students through “eTutoring”.

All LWTC students now have access 24 hours a day to the eTutoring professional tutoring services in writing, math, statistics and accounting. Other Northwest partners in the consortium are Washington State University, Tacoma Community College, North Seattle Community College, Edmonds Community College and Bates Technical College.
